Leggings can be a source of confusion, even for the most seasoned fashionista. If you don’t want to look like Madonna circa 1985, then you must follow the dos and don’ts of wearing leggings.
We adore the versatility of leggings as they complement both fall and winter outfits. If you wish to avoid a major fashion fail, make sure to wear them correctly. Leggings are not pants. They may be opaque, but they should be thought of as a warmer alternative to tights, rather than as a stretchy alternative to trousers. We repeat, leggings are not pants, so please do not wear them as such. Leggings require a level of modesty similar to that required when your wear tights; the exception being leather leggings.
Let us first go through the don’ts.
Do not opt for crazy prints or neon colors. Nothing appears more garish then a formerly sophisticated dresser wearing leggings, as if well prepared for a 90’s workout video. Unless you are off to a work-out session, bright and neon prints do not work!
Never wear fitted leggings with fitted or cropped tops. Tight and sleek jeggings can spike up an outfit when teamed with a flowy silk top, blazer, cool sweater, or even a vest, but to wear leggings with cropped or fitted tops is a big no-no. When wearing leggings, ensure that your crotch is covered with another garment. Do not wear see-through leggings with anything shorter than mid-thigh- to knee-length, and never wear leggings under a clingy outfit, as the elastic and extra fabric is likely to create unsightly lumps and bumps.
Never go too tight. Leggings should not be too loose or too tight. If your leggings reveal small dimples in your legs, they are too tight. If they bunch over your knees, they are too loose. For a perfectly flattering look, choose a legging that falls somewhere between the two. If you find that your leggings rise a few inches above your ankles and get saggy at the knees after several washes, simply discard them.
Now let us discuss more dos.
Leggings look great layered under a floaty blouse with a feminine flair, a wool coat or a leather jacket. Subtly patterned or embossed leggings add texture to your look and create a sense of mystery. If you must wear brightly colored or patterned leggings, pair them with a simple and neutral top. Or, you can balance out a brightly patterned top with a light-colored, simple pair of leggings. To create a sultry look, wear leggings with knee-high boots, high heels, low-cut boots, or pumps. If you are short, pairing leggings with a pair of stilettos or heeled boots will make your legs appear longer. Leggings also look good worn with ballet flats or moccasins. Leggings look perfect when layered under a dress, a skirt, or shorts. Try pairing them with heavy fabrics to create more texture.
Now that you are ready to wear your leggings, squeeze in, stretch out, and have a ball, darling!
