Becoming an icon in any industry is a difficult task. You must have talent, notoriety, and irresistible flair. John Galliano is not only a fashion icon, but a brand as well. Over the years, Galliano has made a name for himself in the fashion industry and beyond. He’s a talented designer, and although his departure from Dior was an unfortunate turn of events, it led him to embark upon a journey of self-discovery, and his own brand legacy.
John Galliano has always been the center of attention for his talent and overall personality. He attended London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art, where a few of England’s greatest designers, including Stella McCartney and the late Alexander McQueen, studied fashion. Galliano’s degree show was so impressive that he got an order filled immediately by the London boutique Browns of England. Needless to say his career had a very lucrative start. He was noticed immediately by Anna Wintour, with whom he remains close friends. Eventually he was handpicked to be Head Designer at Givenchy and then at Dior, which really put Galliano on the map. Dior was where his creativity truly blossomed; his couture fashion shows were elaborate theatrical affairs, resplendent with detail. After Galliano was arrested in a Paris bar for shouting anti-Semitic remarks, he was first suspended and then permanently dismissed from Dior. After his dismissal, he apologized for his behavior and stated that he would undergo anger management therapy. The incident at the Paris bar has sullied his image in the public eye. With the help of Anna Wintour and Oscar de La Renta, Galliano was able to make a comeback. He stayed temporarily at Oscar de La Renta’s studio while preparing his 2013 Fall collection. In January 2014, he presented his couture collection in January for French house Maison Margiela. The collection garnered exceptional reviews.
The longevity of Galliano by John Galliano has never been in question. He has always been able to keep his design aesthetic modern and fresh. His Fall 2015 ready to wear collection embodies his whimsy and creativity. The color palette for his collection is subtle, incorporating various shades of black, chocolate, and orange to set the mood. There were attractive goldfish patterns throughout the collection, as well as beautiful split-back, floor-length trench coats. The evening gowns displayed interesting silhouettes; in particular, one gown, in a gorgeous brilliant orange shade, with an asymmetrical cut and a pleated textured lower portion. The collection has excellent versatility and would appeal to virtually any target market. The pieces looked stunning, whether worn alone or styled within the collection. Galliano’s future seems bright. John Galliano was able to redeem himself and restore the flair that captured the hearts of veterans in the fashion industry. The momentum of his collection hasn’t slowed down since his debut. John Galliano has proven that his creative mind will stand the test of time and serve future fashionistas for years to come.
